The most common modern general Anesthetic products are mixtures of inhalable gases, which include nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and various derivatives of ether, such as Isoflurane, Sevoflurane, and desflurane. The type of anesthesia you get will depend on the type of surgery and your medical condition. Side effects have become less common and are usually not as serious as they once were. Don’t delay important surgery because of fear of Anesthetic products. Local Anesthetic – numbs one small area of the body. You stay awake and alert. Regional Anesthetic – blocks pain in an area of the body, such as an arm or leg. A common type is Epidural anesthesia, which is often used during childbirth. General Anesthetic – makes you unconscious. You do not feel any pain, and you do not remember the procedure afterward.
